We acknowledge that we live in complex, turbulent and uncertain times and our departing point is that we lack the knowledge to transform our systems towards more sustainable and inclusive pathways. Yet, we do know that business as usual is clearly not an option. We are inspired in a mindset of opportunity and operate with an open attitude, with the intention of building a better future for the Mediterranean. If you share these concerns and this attitude, this 6 weeks MOOC will take you through some key concepts and pioneering experiences in the EU which will help understand the transition towards sustainability from a public policy perspective.

As part of the learning program, real destinations will present their challenges and how they are addressing these. Besides, since a long time has passed since the very first mention of sustainable development back in 1987, many global frameworks have emerged, such as SDGs, European Green Deal, Glasgow Declaration, European Tourism Information System and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, among others, and these will be critically analyzed to understand how they contribute, advantages and challenges of their implementation.
Finally, the fifth module will focus on mobility presenting traditional and innovative practices to ensure sustainable mobility in tourism destinations. It will start with the definition of sustainable mobility, followed by the presentation of the challenges of mobility in tourism destinations. Other topics that will be discussed include people’s mode choice in tourism destinations, as well as specific case studies that have been implemented around Europe along with their impact on sustainability.
